Cars I've Owned
I saw on another blog a rundown of cars owned so I thought I'd give it a try. I've never owned anything "cool" per se but I've owned a few I liked. I have a bad habit of talking myself into a new (to me) car every few years. I get nervous when the miles go over 100k even though cars last forever now and I maintain them pretty well. Anyway, here goes!
1. 1983 Chevrolet Chevette. My first car, my dad actually bought it and if you knew my dad you'd be blown away too. I guess that was instead of 14 years of child support... It was actually in pretty good shape, no AC but predictably I beat it to hell and back. Parents: Do not give your 16 year old a nice car, especially a boy. You'll thank me later.
2. 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 2 door. Loved this car, wish it had the V8 but I still drove too fast and racked up a few tickets in a short time.
3. 1985 Ford Escort. I traded the Cutlass for this car, the head gasket blew the day after I got it... Truthfully after that it was a fine car.
4. 1988 Nissan Sentra. Loved it, got hit pretty bad but drove it another couple years. Great car.
5. 1989 Dodge Shadow. Cheap, reliable, boring.
6. 1993 Nissan Sentra. In the running for best car I ever owned. Had one tiny repair of AC fan resistor (or something like that) and nothing else. Drove it for years and was running perfect when I sold it.
7. 1972 Buick Convertible. It was amazing. I wasn't smart enough to work on it and my sister had yet to marry the master mechanic. Wish I still had it. (Was not a daily driver, just a fun car.)
8. 2000(ish) Saturn SL1 (remember Saturn?) My first new car, was a lease. Was good enough I guess.
9. 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. Another brand new car. One of the cooler cars I've owned, quick and fun to drive.
10. 2004(ish) Nissan Frontier. Here's where I'm getting dumb. I'm rolling upside down money from car to car.. Great truck, I should have kept it for ten years.
11. 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R. Race car/toy, not daily driver.
12. 2003 BMW 330i. Likely coolest car I owned. Paid too much, incredible to drive.
13. 2008(ish) Ford Ranger. Was looking to get out from under owing so much on an old car and saw an ad for the fleet model Rangers on sale for super cheap brand new. Rolled my negative equity into the Ranger and came out about what it was worth brand new. Smart move. Again stupid me, I should have kept it for 10 years.
14. 1993 Mazda Miata. Race car/toy, not daily driver.
15. 1994 Nissan Sentra SE-R. Daily Driver. Good car, but I had a kid and didn't feel safe with her in it.
16. 1994(ish) Nissan Sentra. Didn't keep it long, sold to relative.
17. 2003 Mazda Protege5. Also in the running for best car I've ever owned. Bright yellow wagon, stick shift, fun to drive. I took it all over the US (Rockies East) I should have kept it longer but I got my money's worth.
18. 2010 Ford Ranger. Again a super cheap fleet model. Brand new. Kept it a couple years but couldn't safely get both kids in it. Should have kept it anyway...
19. 2012 Ford F150. Loved it. So huge and fast... Didn't like the big payment and once I realized I had a bit of equity in it, dumped it. Really no regrets other than I liked driving it.
20. 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring. Little wagon. My current car. Basic. Reliable. Hoping to keep it for another 3-5 years. I feel like I've learned my lesson. But the itch is still there.
There you have it folks. 20 cars in 19 years. 5 brand new cars. I hope to never do that again..
Running List of Best Cars:
1993 Sentra XE.
2003 Mazda Protege5.
2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring. (No jinx please, still driving it.)
Likely some of the other cars were great and I just didn't keep them long enough.
